VO2 MAX
What is it?
The maximum amount of oxygen a person can use during high intensity exercise.
Why is it important?
VO2 max is a key element for successful athletic performance in endurance events and results can be used to determine:
-
Baseline aerobic fitness levels
-
Aerobic fitness improvements as a result of training interventions
What it involves?
The VO2 max test is performed on a bike or treadmill and typically lasts between 10-20 minutes. Intensity is increased incrementally whilst the participant wears a face mask connected to a machine which measures oxygen inhaled and carbon dioxide exhaled. VO2 max is reached when oxygen consumption remains at a steady state regardless of increasing workload.
