FAT MAX

What is it?

A test used to determine the exercise intensity at which fat burning is maximal. Fat burning is a highly individual process that can change over time. A specific fat burning zone cannot be applied to all individuals.

Why is it important?

The fat burning zone can be used to guide and monitor the following performance and health related aspects of exercise:

  • fat loss strategies

  • training intensity for health related exercise programmes

  • endurance training and performance improvements (increase ability to burn fat as a fuel at higher intensities to preserve carbohydrate energy stores during endurance exercise)

  • changes in fat burning ability over time as a result of training and nutrition interventions

What it involves?

The Fat Max test typically lasts between 20-45 minutes. It starts at a low intensity (walking pace) which is increased every 3 minutes. Participants will wear a face mask throughout the duration of the test so that expired gases can be collected and used to calculate fat or carbohydrate burning capacity.
